2009 Season Review: Sophomore sensation Larry Wight found his second season much tougher as he moved up just two positions on the points ladder to rank 12th in the final overall Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Big-Block Modified standings. Yet before turning 17 years old in late October, the talented driver of the LJL Racing no. 99L Gypsum Express-Stadium International/Bicknell car was able to pick up a heat race victory and secure his first career Integra Shocks Fast Time award --- earned after establishing a new single lap standard at Fulton Speedway on July 4. Celebrated as the DIRTcar Northeast rookie of the year in both Big-Block and Small-Block classes at the conclusion of 2008, Wight led seven laps in the ’09 Wilkens Memorial at Merrittville (Ont.) Speedway to kick off the month of August.

A more than memorable rookie season ended with 23 series starts and being recognized as the Motorsports Safety Systems/G-Force Big-Block Modified Rookie of the Year.

DIRTcar Racing Record: The north country upstart began his DIRTcar Racing career at the tender age of 14, contending in the Sportsman ranks before emerging as the 2007 Motorsports Safety Systems/G-Force Rookie of the Year. On his way to placing 8th in overall Mr. DIRTcar Sportsman points (1 top-5, 4 top-10 finishes), he competed regularly at Can-Am (15th pts/3 top-5), Fulton (19th pts/2 top-5), Thunder Alley (16th pts/2 top-5). His rookie Big-Block campaign kicked off in February with the 2008 Florida DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia Speedway Park where he finished 11th in points, and before turning 16 in October he had scored his first Modified feature win and finished 14th in Big-Block Series points. Declared the 358-Mod points champ at Can-Am in ’08, that same season he became the first driver to win main events in Big-Block, 358-Modified and Sportsman divisions in the same year, as well as earn DIRTcar Northeast rookie of the year laurels in both Big-Block and Small-Block classes.

Fun Facts: Larry started his career in 1999 with microd, slingshot and kart racing topping the list, racking up nearly 80 feature wins while collecting the Syracuse Microd Track Championship (2000-01) and Can Am Kart title (2003-04) along the way. The LJL Racing team consisting of Larry and his parents John & Laura also own Brewerton Speedway and Fulton Speedway in Central New York. The Wights, also former owners of Can-Am Motorsports Park from 2001-03, became the newest landlord of both Brewerton and Fulton in 2009.
